Yahoo! announces departure of co-founder Jerry Yang founded Yahoo! in 1995, along with David Filo

Yahoo! announced on Tuesday that its co-founder Jerry Yang resigned from the board and all its functions in the Internet company, effective immediately.

Besides leaving the board on Yahoo, Yang will relinquish the posts on Yahoo! Japan and Alibaba Group, the company said in a statement.

In a letter to Roy Bostock, chairman of Yahoo!, Yang said, "For me it was time to pursue other interests outside of Yahoo!."

"By leaving the company he co-founded nearly 17 years, I am thrilled with the appointment of Scott Thompson as president and to his ability, along with the entire management team of Yahoo!, to guide the company towards an exciting future and successful, "said Yang.

"Jerry Yang is a visionary and a pioneer who helped greatly with Yahoo! during his many years in business," said Bostock.

"And though all the advice and I respect your decision, we will miss his particular way of seeing things, your vision and wise counsel," he added.

Yang founded Yahoo! in 1995, along with David Filo, and was president of the company in June 2007 to January 2009 during the failed attempt by Microsoft to buy $ 47 billion.
